Nancy Hoyt Belcher's writing career began in the 1970s with an internship as a copy editor in the Book Review and Calendar sections of the Los Angeles Times and as a free-lance editor for the paper's public opinion polls.  She also researched and edited Patty/Tania, a nonfiction book on the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst.

After graduating from California State University at Long Beach with a B.A. in journalism, she worked briefly as a reporter and feature writer for a daily California suburban newspaper -- just long enough to know that freelance writing was what she wanted to do.

Belcher has been freelancing ever since.  Originally she primarily wrote features, business and personality profile stories, but turned to travel writing in 1978 after she joined the marketing department of Air New Zealand in Los Angeles and fell in love with travel to the South Pacific.

Today travel writing is her specialty.  She writes about almost anything related to travel -- from 200-word front-of-the-book fillers to 2,500-word destination stories -- but particularly enjoys writing about festivals, special events, national and state parks, and historic, offbeat and soft adventure travel.

In the mid-1980s, when editors started asking for pictures to illustrate her stories, she took up photography.

Today she is an award-winning travel photographer with photo credits in dozens of national newspapers and magazines (with hundreds of photos featured on page one of newspaper travel sections and on magazine covers), as well as in guidebooks, brochures, textbooks, postcards, catalogues and calendars.

Photography now accounts for about 65% of her career.

Belcher is a native Californian and with the exception of a 14-year period when she lived in the Los Angeles area, she has lived her entire life in Northern California, primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area.  She has resided in Alameda, California, since 1998.
